Overview of Jet Products

Jet Reports

Jet Reports is a flexible reporting solution integrated within Microsoft Excel. It allows you to pull data from your database and display it directly in Excel using familiar functions. Jet Reports is the product used to create reports.

With Jet Reports, you can query a database using Excel-like functions to return real-time results into Excel. It consists of a Jet ribbon that is installed, enabled and configured within Excel. This ribbon contains all the tools needed to create reports via wizards such as the Report Wizard and the Jet Function Wizard, or to create Pivot Tables from a Jet cubes data source.

The Jet installer has two installers, one installer specifically for Excel Add-In and one installer for Jet Hub, Jet Service Tier, and Jet Admin Console.

Jet Analytics

Jet Analytics is a suite of products, made up of the Jet Data Manager. The Jet Data Manager is a back-end solution. With Jet Data Manager, companies can create and maintain data warehouses and OLAP cubes. It contains six predefined cubes built specifically for storing data for reporting.

Typically, this component is only installed on one machine, and only accessible by a select few within the company with database management or IT experience. To optionally pull data, build reports and build Pivot Tables, users can use Jet Reports within Excel, as detailed above. With Jet Reports, you can create and run reports from the database, the data warehouse, or cubes. This component is the one that is typically installed and used by the majority of users within the company.

Jet Hub

Jet Hub is an Information Management System that allows business users access to their business reports using virtually any device through a simple web interface. As a user, you don’t need to install anything to run and view reports. Within Jet Hub, you can quickly find the report that you’re after, specify report parameters, run the report to get up-to-the-minute data, and view it in Excel Online.

With features like sharing, search, version control, and report permissions, Jet Hub is a complete report management system.

Jet Service Tier

The Jet Service Tier is a group of Windows programs that enable communications between Jet applications (on users' computers) and the Jet Services Database (on a server). The Jet Service Tier operates in the background.

The Jet Services Database resides on a SQL server instance and stores information about the following:

  • Data source connection properties: indicate which data sources are available, and their connection information.
  • Users: indicate the names of Active Directory users and groups that are authorized to use Jet Reports.
  • User Permissions: indicate which of the users have access to which of the data source settings.

The Jet Administration Console is a user interface that makes it easy for administrators to create and manage the information in the Jet Services Database. This provides a centralized location from which individual users can access data source settings that have been defined and assigned to them by the system administrator using the Jet Administration Console.
